It comes with pre-loaded maps (in my case western europe) and I naively thought that the same maps will be also available on your computer. Unfortunately this is not the case, that is, the maps you get on your GPS aren&#8217;t available on your computer. You neither have the choice to dump them from your device nor to download them freely from Garmin.<\/p>\n<p>In two words:&#8221;It sucks&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But, as you know, the answer it&#8217;s not possible, forseen is not enought to prevent me from trying, and, this time, with success (yeah I&#8217;m not that masochist to report my failure).<\/p>\n<p>The only drawback is that currently the generated map is not &#8220;searchable&#8221;, that is, you cannot enter an address and have it displayed on your map.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prerequisite<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A Garmin GPS with pre-loaded maps (in our case a n\u00fcvi 765T with western europe maps) and its USB cable (such that you can connect it to your computer)<\/li>\n<li>A Macintosh with the following software installed:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www8.garmin.com\/support\/download_details.jsp?id=4332\" target=\"_blank\">Garmin RoadTrip<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Either a computer running Windows or a virtualisation solution with the following softwares available:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/cypherman1.googlepages.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\">MapSetToolKit<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/cgpsmapper.com\/buy.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Free cGPSmapper<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anpo.republika.pl\/download.html#gmaptool\" target=\"_blank\">GMapTool<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rarlab.com\/download.htm\" target=\"_blank\">WinRAR<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www8.garmin.com\/support\/download_details.jsp?id=209\" target=\"_blank\">Garmin MapSource<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www8.garmin.com\/support\/download_details.jsp?id=3898\" target=\"_blank\">Garmin MapConverter<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>You registered your device on the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.garmin.com\/mygarmin\/customers\/myGarminHome.faces\" target=\"_blank\">Garmin website<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Windows side: dump <\/strong>(adapted from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sorcieremonique.com\/cartographie-routiere-f22\/extraire-les-cartes-du-gps-avec-gmaptool-de-popej-pour-la-cartographie-2009-t615.htm\" target=\"_blank\">sorcieremonique&#8217;s forum<\/a>)<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Create a temporary directory (for example <code>C:\/temp\/garmin<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Run the Free cGPSmapper installer (<code>FreeSetup.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Move the <code>cgpsmapper.exe<\/code> and <code>sendg.dll<\/code> to the temporary directory<\/li>\n<li>Extract the content of <code>wgmaptool040.zip<\/code> to the temporary directory<\/li>\n<li>Extract the content of <code>MapSetToolKit_v1.50.zip<\/code> to the temporary directory<\/li>\n<li>Connect your Garmin to your computer with the USB cable<\/li>\n<li>Copy the<code> gmapprom.img<\/code> file from you GPS (located in the <code>Garmin<\/code> directory) to your temporary directory<\/li>\n<li>Wait as this might take a long time, in my case the file is 1,52 Gb in size<\/li>\n<li>Start <code>GMapTool.exe<\/code>:\n<ul>\n<li>Files tab: choose the <code>gmapprom.img <\/code>file you copied in step 7<\/li>\n<li>Options tab: set correctly the path to <code>cgpsmapper.exe<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Split tab: choose an ouput directory (in my case <code>C:\/temp\/CNEURONT2009<\/code>), select create &#8220;files for MapSource&#8221;, check &#8220;Compile preview map&#8221;&#8221; and click the &#8220;Split all&#8221; button<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Wait as this might take a long time. You end up with a directory containt a lot of .img file<\/li>\n<li>Start <code>MapSetToolKit.exe<\/code>\n<ul>\n<li>Check the &#8220;install in Mapsource&#8221; checkbox<\/li>\n<li>Click the install button. A new window appears<\/li>\n<li>Set the path to the TDB file (in my case <code>C:\\temp\\CNEURONT2009\\mapset00.tdb<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Set the path to the Overview map (in my case <code>C:\\temp\\CNEURONT2009\\mapset00.img<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Set the path to the TYP files (in my case <code>C:\\temp\\CNEURONT2009\\I000017A.typ<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Fill the Registry name field with a sensible name<\/li>\n<li>Click the install button<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Windows side: convert<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Install Garmin MapSource software (as the only download provided is only valid for update you have to trick the installer as follow)\n<ul>\n<li>Install WinRAR<\/li>\n<li>Unrar the content of <code>MapSource_6141.exe<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Run the <code>MAIN.msi<\/code> from the extract directory<\/li>\n<li>Start the <code>Setup.exe<\/code> and install the software normally<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Start MapSource<\/li>\n<li>In Menu &#8220;Utilities&#8221; open &#8220;Manage Map Product&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>In the newly opened window go to tab &#8220;Unlock Regions&#8221; and click &#8220;Add&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>In the Garmin website, navigate to &#8220;myGarmin&#8221; and enter you login and password<\/li>\n<li>Navigate to the &#8220;myMaps&#8221;, &#8220;Manage Maps&#8221; and select you device in the drop down list if necessary<\/li>\n<li>In the section &#8220;Maps installed on this device&#8221; you should find your &#8220;Unlock Code&#8221;. Jot it down<\/li>\n<li>Back to MapSource copy the unlock code in the first field and click ok<\/li>\n<li>Start MapConverter, click &#8220;Next&#8221; till you get to the point where you can chose the map you want to convert. Select the one you want to convert and click &#8220;Next&#8221;. Choose a destination and click &#8220;Next&#8221;. If you don&#8217;t have space problem choose &#8220;No&#8221; for the compression and click &#8220;Next&#8221;. Wait for the conversion to finish.<\/li>\n<li>Copy the .gmapi file to your Macintosh<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Macintosh side: install<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Double click the .gmapi file that you copied from Windows, this opens the Garmin MapManager<\/li>\n<li>Click the &#8220;Install&#8221; button and when finished &#8220;Quit&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Start Garmin RoadTrip, in the upper right corner of the window you shoud now be able to select the newly imported map.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently bought for my parents a new automotive GPS: the Garmin n\u00fcvi 765T.
